What Are Quarter Length Socks — And Why Dog Walkers Love Them

Quarter socks: the underdog of socks

When I am popping up at markets and events, there's a very specific curiosity that I hear over and over again.

"What's the difference between these quarter socks and trainer socks?"

It's a good question. And the answer is one that often changes what our dog walking customers choose to purchase.

Eco-friendly quarter length socks. Seamless toe sustainable athletic socks.

What makes a sock quarter-length?

Quarter-length socks sit approximately one inch above the ankle bone. That's higher than trainer socks (which sit at or just below the ankle bone) and lower than everyday crew socks (which reach up to the calf).

The quarter length is seasonally the sweet spot. It offers enough coverage to prevent rubbing from shoes and boots, while staying low enough to look good with shorts or dresses. It's a style that's equally at home on a muddy dog walk as it is a sunny morning run.

Why they're particularly good for walking When you're walking — especially in boots or sturdy trainers — the fabric at your ankle takes a lot of friction. The extra quarter inch of coverage gives the sock more surface area to grip the leg, and in Teddy Locks' case, a gently elasticated welt keeps the sock exactly where you put it. This is why quarter socks are the style I recommend most to customers who walk dogs regularly, do parkrun, or are on their feet all day.

What to look for in a good quarter sock

Not all quarter socks are equal. Here's what actually matters:

• A properly engineered welt. The welt is the ribbed section at the top of the sock. It needs to be firm enough to stay up without cutting into your leg.

• Arch support. A gentle band around the arch helps the sock stay in position during movement. This is a feature worth checking for — many budget socks skip it.

• Seamless toes. A bulky seam across the toe causes friction over long distances. Seamless construction is more expensive to make but significantly more comfortable.

• Material. Moisture-wicking synthetic fibres outperform cotton for active wear. Cotton holds moisture against the skin. Recycled polyester moves it away.

The yellow heel and toe — not just aesthetic

One detail on Teddy Locks quarter socks that gets noticed is the signature yellow heel and toe. It's become the brand's most recognisable feature — but it started as something practical. If you can pair socks quickly by colour, you never lose one in the wash. Our customers with bigger sock collections tell us this small thing genuinely changes their mornings. You'll find our quarter socks at teddylocks.com, available in yellow, white, charcoal, lilac, seagrass and pink.
